How to fix the Nanoleaf Essentials Smart Bulb without a hard reset

If your Nanoleaf Essentials Smart Bulb is acting up in any way (such as not responding to the smartphone app or not toggling on and off properly), there are several actions you should take before performing a hard reset.

The first thing you should attempt is to simply unplug the light they're connected to, then plug it back in. Power cycling a device is often all you need to do to get itworking properly. If that doesn't work, try removing the bulb and screwing it back in place after waiting for one minute.

Still no luck? If your bulb is connected to a lamp that's controlled by a wall switch, be sure to ensure it hasn't been turned off. A light bulb with no power running to it (obviously) can't be controlled with your smartphone app.

The last thing to try is turning off Bluetooth on your smartphone, waiting a minute, then turning it back on. You might also want to ensure you're running the latest version of the smartphone app (this can be found by diving into the Apple App Store or Google Play Store).

If none of the above helps, then it might be time to perform a hard reset.

How to reset the Nanoleaf Essentials Smart Bulb

Keep in mind that performing a reset will delete all the data related to your smart bulb, including all your connection information. Here's how to perform a factory reset.

Step 1: Remove the bulb from your list of devices on the Nanoleaf app.

Step 2: Turn the light bulb off, wait for three seconds, then turn it back on for less than one second.

Step 3: Do this cycle (off for three seconds, on for less than one second) five times.

Step 4: After the fifth time, your bulb will flicker red to let you know it was successful.

Step 5: You can then proceed to pair your bulb with the rest of your home as if you were installing it for the first time.

Ikea launching 3 new smart home safety gadgets in 2024
The upcoming Ikea motion sensor and door sensor on a yellow desktop.

It looks like Ikea is getting further invested in the smart home space, as the company plans to launch three new smart home safety products in 2024. The lineup includes a window sensor, motion sensor, and water sensor, and all three sync with the existing Dirigera Hub for easy operation and customization.

The products are expected to launch in the first half of 2024, starting with the door and window sensor, Parasoll, in January. Parasoll works much like all other door and window sensors on the market, giving you alerts when they've been opened or closed. It features a slim design (so it doesn't look too obtrusive when installed), and pairs with both the Ikea app and smart bulbs.

The truth about outdoor smart home gadgets and extreme cold
House buried in snow by blizzard.

Electronics and smart home gadgets bring convenience and automation to your home and often need minimal maintenance, save for the odd firmware update. However, owners living in cities with extreme winters need to worry about how the weather will impact their gear. Most shoppers are eager to set up and play with their new toys, and they mainly worry about getting them quickly with that luxurious same-day shipping and don’t think ahead to how that new device will operate when the weather turns harsh.

The truth is, if you live where it gets bitterly, extremely cold, your smart devices like wireless cameras, lights, and other components will likely stop working. Here's everything you need to know about smart home devices and cold weather.
Pay attention to temperature range
When shopping for an outdoor device, we usually pay attention to the IP rating. Many people see this number and assume it means their gadget is impervious to any kind of weather. That might be true to some extent, but the IP rating doesn't extend to extreme heat or extreme cold. IP ratings only rate for water and/or dust ingression, not for how effectively cold or heat can penetrate. To know how a device might be able to withstand cold winters or hot summers, you need to check the temperature operating range.

This is your excuse to buy a temperature controlled smart mug
A black Ember Smart Mug 2 on a countertop.

There are a lot of temperature-controlled products out there, such as mugs or water bottles, but the Ember Mug was one of the first, and you can tell from its premium look and pricing. Luckily, there are still quite a few great Black Friday deals floating around, including this deal from Best Buy on the Ember Mug 2. While it usually goes for $130, you can grab it right now for just $100, which makes it a much more reasonably priced mug, if still a slightly bit expensive.

Why you should buy the Ember Temperature Control Smart Mug²
Those who like hot drinks know the struggle that comes with having a drink go cold, especially when something comes up that takes your attention away. You might make your nice cup of tea or coffee, get an email or call, and forget about it, only to come back and find it tepid or lukewarm, which is probably worse than if it was just cold. Luckily, the Ember Mug 2 does an excellent job of keeping your drink warm, with a temperature range between 120 Fahrenheit and 145 Fahrenheit. That's a pretty good range for most folks unless you love your hot drink piping hot and nearly boiling, in which case this might be a little bit on the low end for you.
