Nintendo and Sony team up for Legend of Zelda movie

After the Super Mario Bros. live-action film bombed in 1993, Nintendo kept its top video game franchises away from Hollywood for decades. But with the runaway success of the animated film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo will unleash its other top title upon movie audiences. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Nintendo and Sony Pictures are planning a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.

While Sony and Nintendo are rivals when it comes to gaming consoles, the two companies have apparently been making plans for the Zelda film for a long time. As part of the announcement, Nintendo and Sony revealed that Wes Ball, the director of The Maze Runner trilogy, is attached to direct Zelda. Ball’s next movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is slated to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.

The Legend of Zelda video game series was created by Shigeru Miyamoto in 1986, and the action role-playing game quickly became one of the company’s most popular titles. Several sequels have been produced over the subsequent decades, with the most recent game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, arriving earlier this year.

Miyamoto will produce the film on behalf of Nintendo alongside Avi Arad and his company, Arad Productions. Sony and Nintendo will co-finance the movie as well. On the official Nintendo Twitter account, Miyamoto confirmed the news and said that he personally asked Arad to produce the film. Arad is the former co-owner of Marvel who produced or executive produced every Spider-Man movie to date.

For now, there’s no time frame for when The Legend of Zelda will hit theaters. But if it’s finished before 2026, then it could be released just in time for the franchise’s 40th anniversary.

With its Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom ad, Nintendo just made one of 2023’s best movies

It's not a revelation to claim that most modern advertising is pretty in-your-face and graceless. In a limited amount of time, companies are concerned with selling their product as quickly as possible, leaving no room for nuance or, dare I say it, poetry. Video game commercials are especially egregious; as any experienced gamer can tell you, those awful Sega ads from the '90s (this one is particularly terrible) still haunt many to this day.

So it's a bit of a surprise to discover a video game ad that isn't loud for the sake of being loud, crude to appeal to the lowest common denominator, or abstract just for the sake of it. Nintendo's been gearing up for its biggest release of 2023, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and it's clear they wanted to make it stand out from the crowd. Mission accomplished, as the latest commercial for the game, a nearly wordless two-minute paean to not just Zelda but also to the power of video games, strikes such a resonant emotional chord that it already ranks as one of the best things I've seen this year.

Where to watch all the Spider-Man movies

Superheroes may be common in movie theaters, but Spider-Man is one of the few who stands head and shoulders above the rest. Marvel's iconic hero helped pave the way for the onslaught of superhero flicks in the modern era, and he has been the company's flagship character for over six decades. Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko captured lightning in a bottle with Peter Parker's alter ego, and the creators who came after them have only added to their legacy with new tales and adventures. Spidey's stories were almost too grand for live-action until director Sam Raimi cracked the code in 2002 with Spider-Man. Since then, Spidey has been a box office superstar with some of the highest-grossing movies in the genre.

Unfortunately, if you want to stream the Spider-Man flicks online, it isn't easy. Unlike its rival studios, Sony Pictures has no streaming service to call its own. And although several Spider-Man films are now on Disney+, the others remain locked down with other channels or streamers. But that doesn't mean that you don't have the option to find them. Sony’s Spider-Man movies and Venom finally come to Disney+

Disney+ has often billed itself as "the home of Marvel," and the streaming service has already reclaimed its original series from Netflix, as well as the R-rated Fox movies Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan, to shore up its lineup. Now, the most iconic Marvel hero of them all is coming home. Disney+ has announced that multiple Spider-Man movies and the first Venom film are coming to the service this spring.

Starting tomorrow, Friday, April 21, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy will make its debut on Disney+. These are the films that helped jump-start modern superhero cinema, and the first two, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, rank among the greatest comic book flicks ever made. Spider-Man 3 isn't quite as beloved, nor is 2012's reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man. Regardless, both will also be on Disney+ tomorrow.
